Located on the southwest side of Dickinson yard, Sam and Mickey’s was originally built and established in 1939 as the “Blue Flag Cafe” to accommodate the influx of railroaders and industrial workers coming into the area as the country was coming out of the Great Depression, and the run-up to WWII.
Sam is the grandson of original owner and founder named Butch. Sam and his wife Mickey bought the bar and grill from him in 1965 and promptly changed the name to “Sam and Mickey’s”. Not a large bar and grill, but always packed with all the locals, including the local miners and railroaders, serving some of the best short order food around, including some of the best burgers around. Next time you’re in the area, stop in a for a great burger and cold beer!

I have been a railfan since the age of 6, and a modeler since the age of fourteen. This is my first fully (well not quite) completed model railroad. I fell in love with trains early in life, ride them when I can, have volunteered on many steam fan trips and have ridden many more steam excursion trips, have belonged to several model rr clubs, and did a stint as a brakeman/conductor on a midwest regional railroad. My layout was published in Model Railroader magazine in 2016. I hope all of you enjoy the ride here on my sites! I now have the second blog/website up for my other hobby: wargaming with Flames Of War. I have been involved in wargaming off and on since my teens......
